It’s that time of year when most of the country can dust off the clubs and go play again. Hopefully, you’ve been Speedballing to Tour Tempo all winter long and you’re ready to go. Even if you haven’t, here are a few tips for going to the course after it’s been a long time since you’ve hit balls:
1. Have NO expectations – the first couple of times out, drop all expectations. This is true whether you’ve trained or not. Your only goal is to get a feel for the ball again.
2. Don’t hurt yourself – make the first couple of sessions short and sweet and be focused. The worst thing you could do is take that first nice day and play 18 holes and hit balls for hours. Try to hit a few and play 9. Your body will thank me for this one.
3. Brush the grass – learn to brush the grass before you hit a ball again. You’ve been indoors and it’s different. Brush the grass 5x in a row in the same spot before you hit your first ball.
4. Have NO judgments – When you hit the ball, don’t be hypercritical of yourself. Let your body/mind observe the ball/contact and then let yourself make small adjustments if you need them. This will allow you to….
5. HAVE FUN!
If you can do these 5 things, I think you’ll be surprised how much more you’ll enjoy your first few times out.
