A new Tempo Discovery and a look at how it applies to Rory

“You can observe a lot by just watching,” Yogi Berra.

John Novosel Sr. is the epitome of that quote and his watching led to the discovery of Tour Tempo. The acorn has not fallen far from the tree and now I have a new tempo discovery that Yogi would be proud of.

I was using the Tour Tempo Frame Counter App to get ready for my presentation at the 2013 PGA of America Teaching & Coaching Summit. I happened to be analyzing Rory’s swing from the 2013 Honda Classic (where he won). Anyhow, I marked the START of his swing, then the TOP, and I accidentally missed the IMPACT button and his swing went to the finish. The #’s I saw up top were surprising, another ratio had been discovered.

Rory’s backswing was 22 frames. We call that Tb. His downswing was 7 frames, aka Td. But when I missed his IMPACT, guess what the # was at his finish? 22 frames! So, I’m calling that Tf….and here’s the cool part Tb = Tf. A 1 to 1 ratio. In other words, the time it takes for you to complete your backswing is equal to the time it takes from the top of the swing to the finish, at least in PGA tour players anyway. I needed more research and when I did it, I found similar results.

So, I immediately contacted my dad, Garrity, and Grober (the Yale/Golf Physicist)…..more coming later this week I analyze Rory’s current tempo……
