Add Distance without Changing Your Swing!

Increasing your Driving Efficiency (how to hit farther with the swing you have now)
With Simulation and everything!

Do you want to hit the ball farther? Stupid Question, I know. Let me rephrase that, “How would you like to hit the ball farther right now?” or at the very least “Would you like to find out how far it is possible to hit a ball with your current CHS?”

That’s it, that’s the question. It’s an important one because it’s the proverbial ‘low hanging’ fruit. What if you found out you could pick up 15-20 yards WITHOUT having to:

• workout
• change your swing
• buy a new driver

That would be pretty cool. So, let’s find out what you are capable of doing RIGHT NOW!!

Because I know that once you max out your current speed aka maximize your geometry, I know that you will WANT TO:

• workout
• change your swing
• buy a new driver

and when you do both of these, that’s how you can pick up 50 YARDS in 2016!!!

Step #1 Determine your current CHS on Flightscope or Trackman

This is the easiest step. Find someone with a Flightscope or Trackman and determine your current CHS. For good measure, make 5 swings and take note of the avg and also the high. (If you are on a Flightscope, they have driver optimizer in the software, so have your pro take you thru that, it’s really cool.)

Step #2 Do the Math

Take your current ‘Geometry’ and go to:

Where you see the word ‘Metric’, click on that and choose ‘Imperial’ (unless you understand the metric system)
2. Plug in your CHS, BS, Launch Angles and Spin. To make the math easy, I took a typical clubhead speed (CHS) of 100 mph. From there, I plugged in some typical #’s that I see when I work with people on the Flightscope:


1.4 smash Factor, so 140 mph Launch (Ball) Speed
10 Launch Angle
2750 Spin
Note the Carry of 212 can total of 256.

Let’s see what happens when we ‘optimize’…..

Now, let’s look at an optimized Ball Launch (prepare to be amazed)
Let’s do a little math to determine your max ball speed. To make said math easy, let’s say your current CHS is 100 MPH. Take that # and multiply it by 1.5 (highest possible smash factor)

100 X 1.5 = 150
Your max ball speed is 150 mph.

Step #3 Plug your OPTIMIZED ball speed into the Flightscope simulator (based on 1.5 smash).

go to:

Where you see the word ‘Metric’, click on that and choose ‘Imperial’ (MPH)

for launch speed, type in 150
for Launch angle try 14 (launch H, type 1)
Altitude (type in your Altitude)
Spin, try 2000, Spin Axis, just do 1 Surface type – go for Hard

Then click on display shot – You can carry it around 250 and roll to around 290.


Voila, you now have a great idea of how far you can carry a golf ball and the roll you should get with your current CHS! In our example we’ve gained over 30 yards!!!!!

If it’s where you want it to be, then you now need to figure out how to dial in your ‘geometry’ and you are good to go.

If you still want more (like me and all of my students), then try plugging in an increase of 15 mph of ball speed. Plug in 165 (avg on tour is about 167), then we find out our distance is 285 carry and about 325 total. Now we are talking!! …..for my next 2 posts, we’ll talk about tips to improve Geometry, and then we will tackle the monster question in the game of golf, “How to pick up 10 mph of CHS?” (10 mph of CHS increase can give you that 15 mph of BS)

    Swing the clubhead was my Ernest Jones was my first golf instruction book I read. John you mentioned either the book or Jones name for having great instruction. Long story short , I made the swing to slow and didn’t hit the ball as far. I can’t wait to speed up and see the results. Thanks for your knowledge.
